Two programs, one ending
Microsoft Works (discontinued in 2009) saved its word processor documents as .wps. WPS Office, a free office suite from the Chinese company Kingsoft that is popular on Android phones and budget laptops, also saves documents as .wps, but inside they are ordinary Word 97-2003 documents.
That's why a .wps file from a colleague, a school or a phone can refuse to open in Word even though it "should" be a Word file, and why Works converters fail on it.
If it's from WPS Office
Rename the file so it ends in .doc instead of .wps (on Windows, turn on "File name extensions" in File Explorer's View menu first). Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs then open it normally. Nothing in the file needs converting.
If it's from Microsoft Works
